THREE STEPS TO SUCCESS

Here are three simple steps to make things happen in your life:DO IT. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale put it like this: "Action is a great restorer and builder of confidence. In action is not only the result, but the cause, of fear. Perhaps the action you take will be successful; perhaps different action or adjustments will have to follow. But any action is better than no action at all."If you wait until you have all the facts or until you know how you will handle every possible challenge that comes along, you'll never get started. Begin somewhere. You can't accomplish anything until you begin. Do it.
DO IT RIGHT. One poet put it like this: "If a task is once begun, never leave until it's done. Be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all."It's true: if you don't have time to do it right, when will you find time to do it over? Do it right.
DO IT RIGHT NOW. In the Spanish-American War, as the American soldiers were trying to capture San Juan Hill, they were thrown back again and again. The black powder ammunition they were using pinpointed their position for their enemies. As soldier after soldier toppled, the troops began to panic. Up rode Teddy Roosevelt, on a little horse named "Texas," urging his men on. Encouraged by his bravery in exposing himself to the whizzing bullets, the troops began to cheer their commander."Don't cheer, men," Roosevelt called out to them. "Fight! Now's the time to fight!"There is a time to cheer. A time to reflect. A time to plan. A time to reminisce. But there is also a time to act. Those who accomplish anything worth while know that time is now.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

Someone noted that their life and their bank both have something incommon - they get out of them about as much as they put in. Which, as far as my bank is concerned, isn't much! But it means I can get a great deal of joy and satisfaction out of life if I am careful about what I put into living. Gary Player for years was a great competitor in national and international golf tournaments. People constantly said to him, "I'd give anything if I could hit a golf ball like you."Upon hearing that comment one day, Player responded impatiently: "No,you wouldn't. You'd do anything to hit a golf ball like me, if it were easy! Do you know what you have to do to hit a golf ball like me? You've got to get up at 5:00 every morning, go out to the golf course, and hit a thousand golf balls! Your hands start bleeding, and you walk to the clubhouse and wash the blood off your hands, slap a bandage on it, and go out and hit another thousand golf balls! That is what it takes to hit a golf ball like me!"His goal was to be at the top of his sport. That lofty dream requires practice, practice and more practice. If your desire, on the other hand, is to excel at living - to give and receive love, to experience joy and to develop fulfilling relationships - then how much of you will you put into your dream? These things, too, are possible with practice. Do you actually practice love, even when you don't feel like it? Do you practice finding joy even when you're unhappy? Do you work at difficult relationships? It is not always easy, but the payoff is worth it!

HOW TO FIND SUCCESS

Rabbi Harold Kushner tells a wonderful story about a bright young man who was a sophomore Stanford pre-med student. To reward him for having done so well in school, his parents gave him a trip to the Asia for the summer. While there he met a guru who said to him, "Don't you see how you are poisoning your soul with this success-oriented way of life? Your idea of happiness is to stay up all night studying for an exam so you can get a better grade than your best friend. Your idea of a good marriage is not to find the woman who will make you whole, but to win the girl that everyone else wants."That's not how people are supposed to live," the sage admonished."Give it up; come join us in an atmosphere where we all share and love each other."The young man had completed four years at a competitive high schoolto get into Stanford, plus two years of pre-med courses at the university. He was ripe for this sort of approach. He called his parents from Tokyo and told them he would not be coming home. He was dropping out of school to live in an ashram (a spiritual retreat). Six months later, his parents got this letter from him:
"Dear Mom and Dad, I know you weren't happy with the decision I made last summer, but I want to tell you how happy it has made me. For the first time in my life, I am at peace. Here there is no competing, no hustling, no trying to get ahead of anyone else. Here we are all equal, and we all share. This way of life is so much in harmony with the inner essence of my soul that in only six months I've become the number two disciple in the entire ashram, and I think I can be number one by June!"
What this young man didn't get is that it's not always about competition and achievement -- doing more and doing it faster than anyone else. It's not HOW you do it; it is WHAT you do. Success is more about doing the RIGHT thing. Miss that, and nothing else matters. Someone put it like this: "I spent my life frantically climbing the ladder of success. When I got to the top I realized it was leaning against the wrong building." Even if he got to the top first, it made no difference. There is no merit in being first to arrive at the wrong place. Do you know what one difference between efficient and effective is?One who is efficient does the thing in the best possible way; one who is effective does the best possible thing. More important than efficiency is effectiveness. More important than climbing highest is climbing the right ladder.Blessed are those who accomplish...the right thing. Blessed are those who scale the mountain and, whether or not they even make it to the top, they know they chose the right path. These people will have found success. Steve Gooder

ACT ON IT

A little bear cub was confused about how to walk. "What do I do first?" he asked his mother. "Do I start with my right foot or my left? Or both front feet and then my back feet? Or do I move both feet on one side and then both feet on the other?"His mother answered, "Just quit thinking and start walking."She was wise, for things will happen only after we put aside thinking and talking and start doing. Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari, said that everyone who has ever taken a shower has an idea. It's the person who gets out of the shower, dries off and does something about it who makes a difference. Or, as columnist Sydney Harris puts it, "Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable." One of the most important lessons we can learnis to act on a good idea. Steve Goodier

THIS WEEKS PRAYER

Set your hand to the plow this week and pray daily that you would achieve all that the Lord has purposed for you in that day. Pray for those in your sphere of influence in your home, occupation, extended family, neighborhood, church and community. Pray for the upcoming elections and ask God what part you should play in them. Continue to pray for Israel, especially now that Iran has issued a call for its annihilation and it is defending itself against terrorist attacks backed by Iran and Syria and coming from Gaza and southern Lebanon. Matt.6:34

CLAY BALLS

A man was exploring caves by the seashore. In one of the caves he found a canvas bag with a bunch of hardened clay balls. It was like someone had rolled clay balls and left them out in the sun to bake. They didn't look like much, but they intrigued the man, so he took the bag out of the cave with him. As he strolled along the beach, he would throw the clay balls one at a time out into the ocean as far as he could. He thought little about it, until he dropped one of the clay balls and it cracked open on a rock. Inside was a beautiful, precious stone! Excited, the man started breaking open the remaining clay balls. Each contained a similar treasure. He found thousands of dollars worth of jewels in the 20 or so clay balls he had left. Then it struck him. He had been on the beach a long time. He had thrown maybe 50 or 60 of the clay balls with their hidden treasure into the ocean waves. Instead of thousands of dollars in treasure, he could have taken home tens of thousands, but he had just thrown it away! It's like that with people. We look at someone, maybe even ourselves, and we see the external clay vessel. It doesn't look like much from the outside. It isn't always beautiful or sparkling, so we discount it. We see that person as less important than someone more beautiful or stylish or well known or wealthy But we have not taken the time to find the treasure hidden inside that person. There is a treasure in each and every one of us. If we take the time to get to know that person, and if we ask God to show us that person the way He sees them, then the clay begins to peel away and the brilliant gem begins to shine forth. May we not come to the end of our lives and find out that we have thrown away a fortune in friendships because the gems were hidden in bits of clay. May we see the people in our world as God sees them.

WE ALL NEED DIRECTION AND ADVICE

"TEENAGERS!Tired of Being Hassled by Your Stupid Parents?
ACT NOW! MOVE OUT, GET A JOB! Pay Your Own Bills,
WHILE YOU STILL KNOW EVERYTHING!"

As humorous as this poster may seem, we all are guilty at times of thinking we know better than the Lord what is best for us. The Bible says, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." (Proverbs 3:5,6).

ADJUST YOUR SAILS

You remember the story about the woman who shook her son awake in the morning. "Get up and get ready for school," she urged. "You're going to be late!""Ah, Mom," he pleaded "I don't want to go to school. The kids don't like me; the teachers are against me; even the custodian hates me.Give me three good reasons to go.""All right," she agreed. "It's 6:30. You're 45 years old. And you're the principal!"Every day we climb from bed, we decide how to face the day. Will we dread it or will we anticipate it? Will we resist it or will we welcome it? Few persons have made us as aware of the power of our attitudes as the late Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. In his book In God We Trust(Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1994), he tells about a woman he describes as "a nice lady," but "she got all tired out by eight o'clockin the morning. And she wasn't even out of her bed by then," he said. The problem was that she "lay there thinking of all the terrible things that were going to happen to her, how badly everything would turn out, how many problems she had, how many difficulties she had to face - and by eight o'clock, she was so tired she could hardly get out of bed."On the other hand, Henry David Thoreau used to lie in bed before rising and tell himself all the good news. When he arose, he was ready to meet the challenges before him. Attitude is everything! It is well said that "we cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust our sails."When you arise tomorrow morning, will you first adjust your sails ?

WHEN YOU'VE BEEN THROWED

It is well said: "Strength and courage aren't always measured inmedals and victories. They are measured in the struggles we overcome. The strongest people aren't always the people who win but the people who don't give up when they lose."It's been said that Andrew Jackson's boyhood friends just couldn't understand how he became a famous general and then the President of the United States. They knew of others who had greater talent but whonever succeeded. One of Jackson's friends commented, "Why, Jim Brown, who lived right down the pike from Jackson, was not only smarter, but he could throw Andy three times out of four in a wrestling match. But look where Andy is now."Another friend responded, "How did there happen to be a fourth time?Don't they usually say three times and out?""Sure, they were supposed to, but not Andy. He would never admit he was beat - he would never stay 'throwed.' Jim Brown would get tired, and on the fourth try Andy would throw him and be the winner."Andrew Jackson just wouldn't stay "throwed"! And that determination served him well for many years. Life will knock us off our feet again and again. You've been there and so have I. But some people just won't stay "throwed." They get upagain, dust themselves off and go for it one more time. These are people of courage. They are also people of faith and hope. Maybe you have been knocked off your feet. Will you stay "throwed,"or will you rise and give it your best one more time?

Cell Phone vs. Bible

I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phones....
What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?
What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?
What if we flipped through it several times a day?
What if we used it to receive messages from the text?
What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it?
What if we gave it to kids as gifts?
What if we used it as we traveled?
What if we used it in case of an emergency?
What if we upgraded it to get the latest version?
It's just something to think about.
Something to make you say hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, and where is my Bible?

Laughing, It's Just Plain Fun

My friend Jack was in the hospital when the new pastor from his church arrived. He sent a message that he would like the pastor to call on him. Before the pastor came to the hospital, Jack ordered an extra catheter bag from the hospital pharmacy. Since he was a pharmacist in the hospital, he knew the staff well enough to make such a request. Then he filled the bag with his favorite pale soft drink --Mountain Dew.The new pastor soon arrived and they visited for a while. At onepoint, Jack reached down and picked up the bag from the side of the bed. He studied it for a moment and then said, "It looks a little thin. Maybe I'll run it through again." And he drank from it. After the new pastor recovered from shock, he laughed with his new friend. And he discovered through the years that Jack brought avaluable gift to life -- laughter."The most thoroughly wasted of all days is that on which one has not laughed," said Nicholas de Chamfort. And another merry soul made this wise observation: "Ever notice how everyone who gets a flat tire can laugh about it a week or a month later? The shorter the distance between the flat and the laugh, the healthier the body, the keener the mind, the stronger the spirit.
"Laugh quickly. Laugh heartily. Laugh often. Sure, it's good for yourbody, mind and spirit ... but mostly, it's just plain fun.

Prayer of the Week

This week ask the Lord to help you prepare for that special marriage supper of the Lamb, and to put away everything that displeases Him, but put on all the spiritual clothing He provides - the garment of praise - the robe of righteousness - compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Continue to pray that the Lord would pour out His Spirit and bring repentance and revival to every nation. Pray for mercy for those who are being afflicted by famine, pestilence, war and natural disasters. Ask the Lord to give our governmental leaders wisdom and courage to continue to stand against tyranny. Remember Israel and the persecuted church. Eph. 6:11-17

A SECRET TO FAILURE

We live in an age of instant gratification. We are not accustomed towaiting. Yet
we do find ourselves waiting from time to time.
* You may be waiting for an answer to a difficult problem. Or waiting for guidance around a business decision or interpersonal problem.
* You may be waiting for a situation to change before you can move ahead.
* You may be waiting for somebody else to complete his or her task before you can act.
We are not accustomed to waiting and most of us don't like to wait. We feel helpless. You may remember how it felt to wait for Christmas when you were a child. I recall one Christmas when I was about four years old. I waited forever for Christmas to come. I couldn't sleep the night before in anticipation. When I awoke Christmas morning I quietly crept downstairs to the large Christmas tree to gaze at the presents there. We celebrated the holidays with my extended family - grandparents, aunt and uncle, cousins, parents, brothers. It was a rule that we waited until everybody was gathered together before presents were passed out. I waited half the morning for the grown-ups to wake up.Then I waited for them to shower, dress and eat. I didn't think I could wait any longer! When the family was assembled around the tree, it was announced that we would have a special visitor that day and we would have to WAIT for him to come! I waited some more. Finally, the visitor arrived. It was Santa Claus. And he said he'd be passing out presents that year. My uncle usually passed out presents, but he didn't seem to be around so my four-year-old mind accepted the arrangement without question. Santa first handed a present to one of my cousins. In our family, we waited for each person to open their gift before the next present was passed out, so I found myself waiting once again. Santa Claus passed a second gift to another cousin. I waited some more. The third went to my grandmother. The next to my brother. Another present was handed to one of the adults to open. I couldn't stand the waiting any longer. When I thought nobody was looking, I grabbed one of the presents and began to open it. Santa quickly snatched it away from me. "You should wait your turn!" he reprimanded. Imagine that! Being scolded by Santa Claus! I was hurt and dismayed. I burst into tears, which seemed the only appropriatething to do. I decided two things that Christmas:First, I decided that I did not like to wait patiently. Second, I decided that I did not like Santa Claus very much. How are you at waiting? Waiting is difficult for children, but adults can practice better waiting skills. They can learn HOW to wait, whether they are waiting for a few moments or for an event far in the future. As I've matured, I've learned one of the great secrets of failure: impatience. An old proverb says, "Don't pick apples while they are green. When they are ripe, they will fall off the tree." As I've grown older,I've learned the value of waiting until the apples fall off the tree. Great events of life cannot be rushed, and all good things will come to fruition in their own time.

News from India

Dear India Family and Friends,

Yes, we did indeed arrive in India as scheduled on May 10th and began our work that very day. Bishop Jonathan Ansar met us at the Delhi airport. On the 11th we ‘shifted’ (that’s how we say it in India!) to Rajahmundry via Hyderabad. Because of a difficulty getting a flight out to Rajahmundry on the 11th, Bro. Yesupadam met us in Hyderabad. Together we prayed and sought God in a very special time of sharing with him. This was to be a surprise visit to our saints in Andhra Pradesh – and it truly was! No one was expecting us! The orphanage was grand! The buildings were clean and the children were busy with a form of summer studies to help them with their next year’s work. We had fun with them and passed out some t-shirts (thanks to New Life Industries), some little pins that remind them that Jesus loves them and of course, M&M’s!

After several other visits that day, we started with the Pastor’s meeting on Saturday. Even in the heat (36 C) the pastors worshipped and the Holy Spirit anointed Bro. Browder as he gave the Word of encouragement. We conducted some much needed business with them and they rejoiced as the National Overseer Bro. Browder and His secretary, me, joined the SCGP officially!

Sunday we joined our new field in Rajahmundry which is worshipping in the orphanage right now. Besides the 52 orphanage children there were approximately 70-75 others in attendance. We had a grand day and they even gave me flowers for Mother’s day!

Bro. Browder went on that evening to our Regional Youth Director, Bro. Abednego’s, church where he pastors. There were easily over 500 in attendance and Bro. Browder anointed over 2/3rd of the congregation in prayer.

We do so thank you for your prayers and ask your continued prayer support. The heat is horrid here. 40C in Hyderabad today.

We did indeed get our permission to go into Nagaland and we are so grateful to God. Tomorrow night I will speak at a new congregation that will join us in Mumbai. The pastor is a man of faith and he and his wife are expecting their first child at the end of this month.

God bless and I will write more as we are able!

Workshops at General Assembly

For all who plan to attend the International General Assembly of the Church of God of Prophecy in August, we invite you to make plans now to attend the following workshop sponsored by Family Ministries. How Should the Church Respond to Homosexuals? Dr. Alan Chambers Thursday, August 24, 2006 from 2:00 - 3:15 pm in the Renaissance Ballroom West

As Christians, many of us know what scripture says about homosexuality. The real challenge comes when we are face-to-face with a person who is involved in homosexuality. The question is, How will we respond? How does the church remain Christ-like in an ungodly world? How do we speak truth in love to the homosexual community? Ideally, if someone wanted to know how Christ felt about homosexuality and homosexual people all they would need to do is look at the Church's reaction. For all who plan to attend the International General Assembly of the Church of God of Prophecy in August, we invite you to make plans now to attend the following workshop sponsored by Leadership Development Ministries.Rediscovering Relational Ministry in the Local Church Dr. David FergusonThursday, August 24, 2006 from 3:30 - 4:45 pm in the Renaissance Ballroom WestThe Bible is full of evidence that relationships lie at the heart of God's purposes for mankind. This workshop will explore the challenge of recapturing the identity of the first-century church by examining three basic areas of ministry – theology, discipleship, and leadership – and redefining them in terms of relationships. The first challenge is to recover a biblically-based relational mindset. This calls for a reevaluation of some of the major elements of Christian theology and asserts that all of these can only be properly understood within the context of loving relationships with God and one another. The second challenge is that genuine discipleship does not result from following a strict regimen of self-imposed spiritual disciplines, but rather grows out of a deep abiding relationship with the One who calls us to Himself, as we pursue a deeper understanding of His eternal Word, and as we build genuine, loving relationships with His people. The final challenge centers on the leadership style of Jesus, who led through caring, connected relationships rather than positional power, personal charisma, and formal influence. It raises a clear call for leaders in today's church to reject positional leadership and embrace relational leadership in accordance with Jesus' example. In this workshop you will also be introduced to the new relational ministry curriculum developed jointly by the Center for Biblical Leadership and Intimate Life Ministries. We encourage every pastor, leader, and member to attend this workshop on relational ministry so that we might all recapture the reality of what it means to be the body of Christ in the twenty-first century. Dr. David Ferguson, founder of Intimate Life Ministries, has a deep passion to challenge the church today with the understanding that relational ministry occurs when Great Commandment love empowers a Great Commission lifestyle. He and his wife Teresa have shared a Biblical message of health and relevance for more than twenty-five years. Their passion for seeing the Great Commandment lived out among God's people has led them to impact thousands of ministers and laity. As co-directors of Intimate Life Ministries, they direct a team which serves more than 35,000 churches in the United States and abroad with training and resources.

Pecking Away

Do you know when to give up and when to keep trying? FormerUniversity of Alabama president, Frank Rose, used to tell a favorite story about a time, in the mid-1960s, when evangelist Billy Graham was invited to speak at an event in the university's football stadium. There were 18,000 people in attendance that evening. America's civil rights movement was well underway and the stadium crowd represented one of the largest racially integrated meetings ever held in the state. As Rev. Graham was giving a message about easing racial tensions, a huge thunderstorm gathered overhead. Suddenly, lightening struck and a ball of fire seemed to emanate from the speaker's microphone and travel down the wire.Graham immediately sat down. Then he leaned over and spoke to Alabama's legendary football coach, Bear Bryant. "Coach," he said, "you'd have stopped, too, if that lightnin' had hit you like that.
"Bear said, "No sir!"
"What do you mean?" asked Graham.
"Well," he said, "if I was down on the one-yard line, I wouldn't have stopped until I scored.
"At that, Rev. Graham returned to the microphone and finished his talk. Safety considerations aside, the story reminds us of one of life's important lessons. In most of what we do, there is a time to stop, but there is also a time to score; a time to pack it in, but also atime to complete the task. The woodpecker owes its success to the fact that it uses its head and keeps pecking away until it finishes the job!
Today, will you quit? Or will you keep pecking away?
